MS. BAHATI MURIGA TANZANIAN FARMER HONORED BY OXFAM IN A RECEPTOPN AT THE EMBASSY OF TANZANIA IN WASHINGTON DC

On Thursday October 9th 2015, the Embassy of Tanzania in Washington DC hosted a reception of guests, sponsored by Oxfam, to highlight their Female Food Hero initiative. Ms. Bahati Muriga was a guest speaker who spoke concerning her work as a farmer, also known for winning the Swahili reality television series “Mama Shujaa wa Chakula”. Ms. Muriga lives in the Mwanza region of northern Tanzania and shorty after becoming a widow she began to look for ways to support her two children while working as head of a primary school she continued to take on more of her husband’s farming. The extra income from her farming activities enabled her to provide education for her children and take care of many other family needs.
 
The Embassy of Tanzania hosted the event for the Female Food Hero who came to DC from Tanzania. The Oxfam event comes in advance of World Food Day (October 16th) and is part of Oxfam America’s overall activities around World Food Day which includes high level presence in Iowa at the World Food Prize where our Female Food Hero will be a featured speaker/guest at several events.  Ms. Muriga will also travel to Des Moines, Iowa to take part in World Food Prize events.
